4 Things You Didn't Know About Our Leather Care Products

At Preservation Solutions, we're dedicated to crafting leather care products that go beyond the ordinary, ensuring your leather items receive the specialized attention they deserve. Here are 4 things you might not know about our products for leather care:

1. Our Oils Undergo a Unique Multi-Stage Process

It's not just about adding oil to leather; it's about the right kind of oil and how it's prepared. Our leather care products feature oils that undergo an extensive multi-stage process. First, the oils are oxidized to prevent any darkening of your leather. They are then processed twice to eliminate double bonds, which are a common culprit for acid deterioration over time.

To ensure the oils remain within the leather fibers and don't leach out, they are given a hydrogen bond. Furthermore, our oils are stratified to remove any lingering natural salts and buffered by a special process, guaranteeing long-lasting life and protection for your leather.

2. We Strictly Avoid Harmful Ingredients for Leather Longevity

Many conventional leather care products contain ingredients that can actually do more harm than good in the long run.

Our formulations are intentionally free from:

  • Glycerin: This common ingredient can leave leather feeling sticky and, in humid conditions, promote mold growth.
  • Sulfonated Oil: Often found in other products, sulfated oil can lead to hydrolyzation, a process that causes acid rot in leather.
  • Neatsfoot Oil: Although a widely used “go-to” (for generations), neatsfoot oil can clog the leather pores and cause rotting, cracking and flaking. When it gets cold, it forms a white waxy film. It will darken leather, is acidic in nature - which will harm stitching, and will attract dust and dirt.

Additionally, our solvents are sulfur-free, preventing the rotting of stitching, and all our oils are carefully pH balanced. This dedication to excluding detrimental components ensures a safer and more effective treatment for your leather goods.

3. We Believe in Specialized, Uncombined Formulas

You won't find a "cleaner and conditioner in one" product from us, and there's a good reason why. We firmly believe that cleaning and conditioning are two distinct processes. Mixing a surfactant (cleaning agent) with conditioning oils can lead to separation, rendering both products ineffective.

We also recognize that not all leather is created equal. Different tanning processes and varying conditions of leather require specialized care. That's why we don't offer a "one-size-fits-all" solution. Each of our leather care products is specifically formulated to address the unique needs of various leather types, ensuring optimal results for everything from antique artifacts to everyday leather items.

4. Our Leather Care Products are Offered by some of the Top Restoration and Conservation Supply Institutions in the World

This list includes TALAS (NYC), Preservation Equipment (UK), Carr McLean (Canada), and Guardian Museum Services (China). Our commitment to advanced formulations and safe, effective ingredients ensures that Preservation Solutions leather care products are trusted by museums, restoration specialists, and leather enthusiasts worldwide.
